My Apple

I like to think that I have a pretty healthy sense of humor. I am very heavy handed in the sarcasm department, and Julia is quite used to this. What I didn't realize - she is getting pretty proficient at using it.

Bobby was rounding up a trip to Austin and was due home later in the day. Julia and I decided to run to the bakery for some belated birthday treats for him and then onto Costco for our regulars. While I was driving, she was pretty wrapped up in a book. She made up for these long stretches of silence in spades while we were in Costso. From the moment we passed the greeter, her mouth was off and running. She wouldn't stop. I have to admit I scarcely knew what she was talking about, but on and on she rambled. While in deep crunchy snack contemplation, a frustrated Julia's voice broke through my Skinny Pop trance. Exasperated, "Mom,,,what do you call that holiday? You know the one,,," And on she went shrouded in vagueness. Now, it's my turn to be exasperated. At this point I am at least 45 seconds behind her thought train and have no idea what in the Hell she is talking about. "Come on,  mom, the hol-i-day, " Her voice is drawn out as though she was speaking to someone who did not really understand English.

"Oh that holiday," says a grinning me, "That's the Give Your Kid a Smack Day."

Without a delay, she looked at me deadpan and said, "No, that one is in July."
